Cheese
Here you can find all our Dutch souvenirs related to Cheese! Cheese has long been something very Dutch. From very early on cheese was made in the Netherlands. The provinces of North Holland, South Holland and Friesland have wet soil which best suited for keeping dairy cattle. In the Middle Ages Dutch cheese was already exported abroad. Starting from the Netherlands Golden Age (1600-1700) it has been known abroad as the cheese country.
Cheese was mostly made by farmers on the farms. From the late 19th century industrial production started. Especially in peatlands of South-Holland and Utrecht there are still farms where cheese is made.
