This cosy city is one of the most popular tourist destinations of Europe. If you have been to Amsterdam, you may know that this city is known for its historical past, the iconic canal houses of the Dutch Golden Age, coffee shops, museums and more. Since Amsterdam is not a huge city, the Old centre can easily be explored by foot, or if you want to do it the Dutch way: visit the centre by bike! Other famous locations in the city center are the Red Light district, Dam Square, Museum Plein and the Vondelpark.
The history of Amsterdam
The city of Amsterdam was founded around the year 1200. At the beginning, this place was just only a swampy area on the IJ, bisected by the Amstel river. Amsterdam is named after the dam that was built near the Amstel river. Between 1300, the year that Amsterdam acquired city rights, and the first half of the 15th century, the population grew so fast that the city had to be expanded three times with new canals. Amsterdam could grow so fast because from an economic point of view, the city was doing very well. In the 16th century, Amsterdam took over from Antwerp as the largest port city in the region.
The northern parts of the Netherlands, which together formed the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands, flourished in the fields of trade, science and the arts in the seventeenth century. Because of this, this era is also called the 'Golden Age'. It were the glory years of the Republic and in particular of Amsterdam.
Amsterdam - The city of canals
Did you know that the canals of Amsterdam are listed as a World Heritage site? In August 2010, the 17th-century canal belt was added to the Unesco World Heritage List, making it the ninth UNESCO site in the Netherlands.
The canal belt, or also known as de grachtengordel in Dutch, is the part of the Amsterdam city center that lies along the four main canals: Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht. The iconic canal houses are built along the 165 canals that the city has. Together, the canals are 75 kilometers long. Thus, if you want to see all the canal houses, it may take a while. The oldest canal is the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. This canal was built in 1385. And with 6.3 kilometers, the Singelgracht is the longest canal of Amsterdam!
Amsterdam - The city of bicycles
You may already know that in the Netherlands, there are a lot of bicycles. In Amsterdam, that is also the case. There are nearly as much as bicycles in Amsterdam as people living in Amsterdam. The 750,000 inhabitants of Amsterdam together have about 600,000 bicycles. That is a lot, right?! So truly can say the Amsterdam is really a city of bicycles. To get the whole experience, it is worthwhile to rent a bike if you are in Amsterdam. But to do so, make sure you know how to ride a bicycle! Especially in the city centre it is usually very busy.
